Bridge Authorization and Construction
On April 7, 1887, Bastrop County Commissioner’s Court (BCCC) ordered the construction of four new bridges. One of these four bridges is the Lower Elgin Road bridge, which is specified in the minutes as “On Wilbarger Creek at the old bridge site.”
At the May 31, 1887 meeting, the BCCC opened and examined the bids received for the four bridges. The Kansas City Bridge and Iron Company of Kansas City, Missouri submitted the lowest bid, which offered to construct the bridges at a total cost of $12,829.00. The BCCC authorized Mr. J.M. Bassett “… to enter into contract with said company for the construction of said Bridges [sic] and to sign the same on behalf of Bastrop County.” The Historical Documents section includes copies of the original, handwritten minutes of the BCCC.
